Palmiet is a water loving shrub growing up to 2 meters high. Great for preventing erosion on river banks and dams. Flowering spring and summer months.

Palmiet can also be a feature plant with some pruning of the dead leaves. It has blue-ish in colour,  sharp leaves. Winter time, while all the soil is moist,  is a good time to thin out and separate for replanting.

Palmiet is endemic to South Africa. a wetland plant found throughout the Cape Floristic region. Occurring naturally in rivers, streams and fringes. Found mainly in the Fynbos vegetation areas pf the Cape Floristic region of Western Cape, South Africa. It can also be found in areas in Natal. Playing an important role in river ecology and habitat provision (allowing shelter and nutrients  for living organisms), a peat forming plant.

Palmiet increases the ability to absorb water in in flood plain areas and helps retain water in the dry months of summer. Growing throughout the year it is often removed to to create a better water flow. It would be beneficial  to rather clear moderately and replant in more areas, this will help create a more sturdy river bank and steady waterflow. And although it could not completely contain enormous amounts of flood water, it will certainly help to prevent the collapse of river and dam walls. Along with other plant types to create a more stable area.
